The hard way

My parents who had vacationed in Brazil for a week made it back to the U.S. last night but missed their connecting flight out of Miami, so they bought tickets for an 8:30 am flight, WHICH, THROUGH SOME INCREDIBLY EGREGIOUS CIRCUMSTANCE, THEY SOMEHOW ALSO MISSED. And because they evidently don't believe that the third time is the charm, they've whimsically decided that the correct solution is to rent a car and DRIVE. BACK. TO. ILLINOIS.

I tried calling my mom to talk her out of it, but her cellphone is apparently dead.

Normally they're really intelligent people, but looking at their behavior from the last 24 hours (or 72 hours, if you count my mom's email), I have now lost all confidence that they are capable of making rational decisions. And the fact that my dad prefers taking the "scenic route" (translation: they're on some scary, barren highway in the south that can't be found on Google Earth) plus the fact that they're driving around without a cellphone that works means... well... hoo boy.

The obvious question is why couldn't they just get another flight??

Wow, thats interesting. But with gas at $4.00 a gallon it would probably be cheaper to walk I say they should just walk though, that would be hardcore and cheaper (assuming they live through it).

They must have just been so frustrated at the airport that they weren't thinking clearly. Or maybe they were feeling extra adventurous. A week out of the country will do that to some people.

It's now not hard to believe that you are the spawn of crazy parents.

Hey Merriam Webster, I'm going to call you out on your use of "egregious." I don't think it works well in that context. Chew on that.
