An amazing soul
One time when I was a kid, there was this lonely old lady who was best friends with my grandma back when we lived in Iowa, and she called asking to speak with my mom. I didn't hang up the phone after my mom picked it up from upstairs because I enjoyed hearing people talk about my grandma. I wanted to eavesdrop. My grandma had been sick for years and was only a shell of her former vibrant self in a nursing home, so all I really had were stories.
"She just one day came out of nowhere," the lady warmly said over the phone to my mom, "with seven children and no money, but she had such an upbeat attitude. I've never met anyone who smiled so much, with so little to smile about. She was just so full of life, so generous to people, and she was so smart, too. Did you know that only weeks into moving to America, she was speaking fluent English and also learned how to drive a car? That just doesn't happen. She was truly an amazing soul, and there isn't a night that passes by that I don't pray for your family."
People have always huddled together to share stories about my grandma, but for some reason it's this particular phone conversation between that old lady and my mom that I seem to think about the most when it comes to her.
My grandma passed away three years ago today. She continues to be an inspiration for me and my family.

Sounds like she was a great lady. :)
Pete is that you in the picture?
She looks so young and beautiful!
Great story...reminds me of my own grandma too, because she held the fort down in our family for years. It's always a source of pride when you realize the blood flowing through your veins came from a great person.
Wow, best-looking grandmother I've seen in a while. How does one get skin like that? I need to know. I think it is wonderful how proud of her you seem to be; I would guess that wherever she is now, she's equally as proud of you.
7 kids??? Ouch.
awww, she does sound like she was a very amazing person. :)
