Back in black

There's only a handful of things or people in life that make me swoon -- Radiohead, Natalie Portman, and Michael Jordan are a few that immediately come to mind -- but the one thing that can keep a smile firmly planted on my face for hours upon hours is Spider-man.

The first Spider-man comic book I ever read was actually the first Spider-man comic book created -- Amazing Fantasy #15 (a reprint, of course). I remember it like it was yesterday; I was 8 years old, in a grocery store aisle, turning each page of that comic book with painstaking care because I was simply in complete awe of the character.

People always ask me why, beyond the obvious nostalgic sentimentality, do I love Spider-man so much? And what I'll usually tell them is that not only do I enjoy his quirky powers, but I appreciate the everyman-ness of his alter ego. Peter Parker is not some psychotic, brooding billionaire, nor some god disguised in glasses and a business suit. He's just a regular young adult, worried like the rest of us about paying the rent. It's Spider-man's humanity that appeals.

But, deeper than that, I think the reason I connect with Spidey so much is because, well, he reminds me of myself. I won't get into specifics, but really, he does. And what better escapism is there than to see yourself webslinging through New York, kicking Doc Ock's butt?

Shit. Look at me. I'm going to stop right there. Please don't stop reading this post. I'm really not insane.

Anyway, click on the picture below of Spidey in the black suit and you'll know why I screamed OH GOD YES YES YES!!! several times in my office this morning during my lunch break, forcing nearby coworkers to close their doors. You'll swoon too.

I've always been an X-Men kind of guy, personally. Spidey doesn't really interest me much, but you can get me hook line and sinker with X-Men. Of the 15 trades I own, 9 are X-Men (or variants) so it's safe to say I'm crazy.

You didn't by chance see Radiohead last week, did you? I suppose not, or I'm sure I would've heard about it. I'd have loved to go, but the Monday and Tuesday night shows made it too much for me to overcome...along with the outrageous prices I saw on Ebay.

Alan, I was a huge fan of X-Men as a kid, especially during the Marc Silvestri / Jim Lee years. However, I'll always have a soft spot for Spidey.

Dan, would you believe that I didn't even know Radiohead was in town until two days AFTER they were here? First Grant Park in 2001, then Alpine Valley in 2003, now this. One of these days I'll get to see them. What were the prices you were seeing on Ebay? I'm sure I would have fished out the dough.

I was seeing upwards of $250 per, but that was maybe a week after they went on sale on WASTE. Maybe they dropped a bit as the show approached, but having seen them twice and hearing some mp3s of their previous shows (which were good, but I'd by then heard new material), I couldn't justify the price. One day, I'll get those cd's sent to you, and when I do, I'll include The Eraser, Thom's soon-to-be-released album. It's good; I thought it'd be really out there and that the other band members were holding him back from doing crazy things with Radiohead, but I'd say The Eraser's more like Amnesiac-lite.

that trailer was most excellent - out of all the superhero movies that have been made, the spider-man movies have the highest replayability/watchability... once the spider-man 3 dvd comes out i'm shelling out for the trilogy.

fyi: tyrus thomas is gonna break an ankle in training camp ... and what's with the bulls' fascination with foreign players that will never make it?

dragan tarlac, anyone?

I personally wanted Adam Morrison to go to the Bulls. They lack a really good vocal leader and someone that can consistently put points on the board. That said, Tyrus Thomas is still a great pick -- as long as he (like you mentioned) stays healthy and develops offensive moves.

What's wrong with foreign players? Tarlac was drafted with very little scouting done on him; Krause became prematurely obsessed with Europe after successfully getting Kukoc. But it's not like the Bulls have a history of bad Euro picks. Kukoc was a 6th Man of the Year winner. Nocioni almost singlehandedly beat the (now champion) Miami Heat in the first round.

And I've been getting a lot of spam comments recently so now I'm try to close comments for new posts after about a week.
