Saigon
No one in this city calls it by the name the rest of the world refers it to (Ho Chi Minh City). Affectionately, this city is still called Saigon by its residents. I’m currently on Day 3 of my trip here in the motherland, and I LOVE IT. Every American-born Vietnamese person needs to come here at least once in their lives. The people are friendly, the weather is great, and the food is some of the best you’ll ever have. In three days, I’ve already developed a great attachment and affection for Saigon.
At the beginning of the trip, I hoped that it would change me a little, maybe provide some insight and enlightment about where my parents came from. Now, at this rate, I wouldn’t be surprised if I came back to America an entirely new man; it’s the same way some African-Americans visit Africa and then come back to the U.S. condemning the N-word and converting to Islam or something.
I’ll tell you one thing though: I’m not going to stop being a funny dude, the greatest Asian in the history of the universe.
I'll tell you another thing: Saigon's traffic is motherfuckin’ nightmarish.
It’s complete chaos how their traffic system (or lack thereof) works. Yes, they have stoplights. No, they don't use them. Streets are packed with literally thousands of motorbikes weaving between taxi cabs weaving between jay-walking pedestrians, with no regard whatsoever to traffic lights. People honk their horns every two seconds, not because they’re angry, but because they are trying to communicate other vehicles of their presence. It’s really a sight to behold.
Well, that’s it for now, people. I just want to let you all know that I’ve received your emails, but have had limited time in the internet cafes, so I just haven’t gotten a chance to write back. But don’t worry, I’ve read all your emails and appreciate it.
Tomorrow we’re leaving Saigon and moving north up through Vietnam, eventually stopping at Hanoi, the nation’s capital. Hopefully I’ll get a chance to blog sometime soon. Till then, everyone, take care and have a safe New Year's.
And as they say here in Saigon: adios!
